Ikaroa Takiwātanga wānanga - Porirua


Are you interested in learning more about takiwātanga (autism)? This wānanga is for you!

Kanorau is delivering a series of wānanga in Porirua for Kōhanga Reo, Puna Reo and Pasifika services in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

These wānanga are designed for kaimahi within Kōhanga Reo, Puna Reo and Pasifika services in Ikaroa who want practical tools, deeper understanding, and culturally grounded approaches for supporting tamariki who experience the world differently.

Grounded in te ao Māori values and strengths-based practice, the wānanga explores how educators can create environments where tamariki whaitakiwātanga feel safe, understood, and are able to thrive.

Dates and location

  • Day 1: 9.30am-3:00pm: Thursday, 7 May 2026

  • Day 2: 9.30am-3.00pm: Friday, 8 May 2026

FAQ’S

  • Is there a cost to attend?

No. Both wānanga are funded through SELO by Ministry of Education.

  • Are both days of the wānanga going to be the same?

Yes both days will deliver the same content so please only register to attend one day.

  • What will the wānanga cover?

Each wānanga will be tailored to those attending and built based on the registrations. As an idea, a wānanga can explore:

  • What takiwātanga (autism) can look like for tamariki in early learning environments;

  • How behaviour can be understood as communication;

  • Practical strategies for supporting sensory needs, communication, and emotional regulation;

  • Ways to strengthen relationships with whānau and work collaboratively around support;

  • How to build inclusive environments that support all tamariki; and

  • The wānanga blends practical strategies, reflection on teaching practice, and culturally grounded perspectives to help educators grow confidence in inclusive teaching.

  • Who is this wānanga for?

This wānanga is designed for kaimahi who are wanting to strengthen their understanding of takiwātanga (autism) and grow culturally grounded inclusive practice within their centre.

  • How many people can attend?

Spaces are limited at each wānanga. Registrations are allocated strictly on a first in, first served basis. We recommend registering early to avoid disappointment. Please also only register if you are able to commit to the dates.
